Street: Panhandle bike lane, westbound
Cross Street: Cole
City: San Francisco
State: California
Date: 2006-06-24
Time: late morning
Severity: not severe
Driver’s Vehicle: other
Driver’s Age: 28
Driver’s Gender: Male

Description: I was heading west on the bike lane at a moderate speed (~18mph). A group of guys is jogging ahead of me, I did not see anyone approaching in the left lane so I swung out to pass. Some hipster on a track bike wearing all black (of course) comes tearing down the trail at over 25mph. He swerves and overcorrects on the dirt, which is covered with slippery Eucalyptus leaves. Totally wipes out. Luckily he was okay. I scolded the guys for running in the bike lane and told them to cross the park and use the pedestrian side. But really, (begin rant) the problem was mostly the guy who was too cool to ride a bike that isn’t geared for TRACK SPRINTS, which had NO BRAKES, while wearing “starving-artist-chic” black clothes on a foggy morning. I’m getting really sick of this trend. Track bikes are cool and all, but look around– this isn’t exactly a velodrome. Our streets are rough, narrow, and freaking steep. It’s not like any of these uber-cool wannabes have ever actually seen a velodrome, much less learned to ride a track bike properly, but my point nevertheless is there’s a reason why normal bikes have gears, brakes and freehubs. It’s to keep you from breaking your jaw or needing knee surgery at 26. Idiots! (end rant).
