Bike Tour Leader Education

After a recent event that made me rethink leading bicycle tours, I decided to find out where all the tour leader resources were. I cobbled together a number of certifications that every tour leader should have:
Every tour leader should at least have a bike ed course. See . In San Francisco, these are generously offered by the san francisco bicycle coalition.
If you want to go into more depth and become a bike ed teacher, see the League of American Cyclists at. http://www.bikeleague.org/educenter/education.htm
The best course offered specifically on touring is given by The Adventure Cycling Association. This is a three day course covering all aspects of a long tour.
I suggest mixing these skills up with a first aid course. A good local spot to take a first aid course is through the San Francisco Paramedic Association
Finally, don’t forget the importance of bicycle maintenance. If you are truly serious about being the best tour leader you
can be, you may want to become a certified mechanic and attend the United Bicycle Institute or the Barnett Bicycle Institute. At the very least, I would pick up a book such as the Haynes Manual or Park Tool’s Big Blue Book.
So, that’s safety and maintenance training in a nutshell.
